Innovations In Radio: Advancing Voice Interactivity and All-Digital Operations

The future of radio is emerging at a fast and furious pace. The listener landscape is evolving with exponential listening increases on smart speaker platforms, and in-car infotainment systems are rapidly evolving to support enhanced user experiences. Innovations in Radio focuses on three key innovations, tests, and experiments that impact our industry.

Join us as we explore how the radio industry can harness the power of these changes with pioneers in this space including:

  • Mike Cooney, Vice President of Engineering/CTO, Beasley Broadcast Group will discuss his work on an all-digital FM field conducted in early 2018 while exploring the opportunities and lessons learned in the process.
  • David Kolesar, Senior Broadcast Engineer, Hubbard Radio discusses the process of placing the first full-time, all-digital AM station on air under experimental authority (WWFD, 820 kHz, Frederick, MD).
  • Ben Poor, Project Manager, EBU discusses the EBU/PILOT co-development of a prototype voice-controlled hybrid (over-the-air plus internet) radio. This project shows how existing voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant can be utilized to make smart decisions about the best way to listen to a radio station.
This discussion will be led by David Layer, Vice President, Advanced Engineering with NAB.
